Elaine, a student in one of my mediumship development classes, recently murmured about getting the same spirit presence again and again when, during practice exercises, she tried giving a reading to another student in the class. “I want to feel like I’m touching in with someone different,” Elaine groused to me after class.
First of all, I told her, never complain when the spirit world allows you to connect with someone on the other side. And then I asked: “Why do you feel you need to intuit the presence of a new spirit person?”
(A quick pause while I set the stage: One of the exercises in my mediumship development class – and, to a lesser extent, in my psychic development class – is to give a reading to a fellow student. Over the course of a semester, one student may bring spirit communication to the same classmate several times. Granted, messages may get repetitious, but that’s just part of learning.)
Elaine sighed. “Because I always feel the presence of Martin’s mother. And she always has the same kind-of message: ‘I’m with you, I love you, please smile more, and don’t forget to water the plants.’ Can’t I touch in with one of his aunts or uncles, or friends from university, or whatever?”
Over the course of the semester, Martin received many similar messages from his fellow students, but Elaine was right about the basic gist. And his mother was quite strong in her communications. “That could be because his mother was a very strong-willed woman,” I said. “But she was quite close to Martin in life, so why shouldn’t she be that close to him in spirit?”
Elaine was quiet a few moments digesting those words. Then I said, “When you decide to give readings professionally, you’ll hopefully have clients who may want to see you often. And you’ll undoubtedly hear from their same spirit people. In fact, some clients want to touch in with the same spirit loved ones. Would you deny them the chance to hear from their beloved people because you’d rather touch in with someone else?”
“Okay,” Elaine said. “But then how do I know if I’m really experiencing spirit communicating with Martin’s mother, and not just me remembering and then repeating what I said last time?”
I explained that when communicating with spirit, you’ll feel different, like the words or feelings you’re experiencing are coming at you from another source. Words from your memory feel like they are yours, and you’ll feel you have an attachment to them, because it is coming from your memory or life experience.
And as to the same spirit coming again, I continued, perhaps it’s because that spirit recognizes that you can hear it, and understands that you’re easy to work with. And in terms of working with clients, if I recognize a spirit I’ve touched in with before, and I feel the spirit wants to give me the same message. I’ll pass on that communication. Maybe it’s something important the client needs re-hear. But I’ll also ask the spirit for new information by saying, “Give me something I haven’t said before to validate your presence for me, and for my client.”
Elaine conceded the point. I thanked her for her interest in the work and said I’d look forward to seeing her next class. Later, I thought about a client who booked an appointment every year. Rudolph was a successful playwright who came to hear from his father, who had passed a decade ago from lung cancer. Interestingly, writers in spirit often touched in during the sessions to give him suggestions about works in progress. (No, Shakespeare never stopped by.)
I don’t recall much about Rudolph’s last session – I rarely remember messages I pass to clients – but I know he thanked me, and said he’d see me again in about a year. That’s always satisfying: knowing I’ve helped a client, and they plan to see me again.
