“You gotta listen to this,” my husband said, eager to read me a story he found in Fortean Times, his favourite magazine. He knows I like stories about spirit connection, and I wasn’t disappointed by what came next. I love hearing people’s experiences with contact dreams.
Contact dreams are the most frequently reported method of after-death communication with a loved one. Briefly, a spirit contact dream, unlike normal dreams, can be so incredibly vivid, you’ll remember minute details even years later. In a contact dream, the person who has died usually looks much younger and is in perfect health. They smile and tell you that they are fine and happy; they did not suffer during their passing and they are with family members. Afterward, you may even wake up from the dream with a feeling that the spirit person has hugged and kissed you. In fact, researchers in cross-cultural studies found that about half of all reported spontaneous psychic experiences occurred in dreams.
The story appeared in the magazine’s “It Happened to Me…” column, in which readers write in about their paranormal experiences. In the piece my husband read, the author wrote about John, a close friend, who had taken his own life because of personal and marital difficulties, and he didn’t plan to attend John’s funeral because he didn’t want to run into the wife, who he blamed for John’s downward spiral.
The night before the funeral, the story continued, I lit a candle on the windowsill and said my goodbyes to John out loud and went to bed.
At some point in the night I had a very clear, lucid dream in which my bedside phone, a landline, rang. I answered it and it was John. He told me he was sorry for leaving, but he had no choice. I asked John if he wanted me to go to the funeral and he said he wouldn’t be there, so there was no point. He explained that he was happy now, and he would always be able to watch over his two children.
We said our heartfelt goodbyes and I cried a little. I put the phone on the bedside table, not on the phone cradle, as I didn’t want to hang up.
The next morning I woke up and felt calmer than I had in weeks. I felt there was some closure and on some level I had said goodbye to John, even if it was only in a dream. Then I noticed the phone was not on the cradle.
After my husband read me that story, he put the magazine down and his thoughts seemed to go inward for a few moments. Then he turned to me and said, “Did I ever tell you about the time I dreamed my mother visited me?”
I shook my head.
“This happened several years ago,” he said, “and it occurred about three months after she passed. You know how I keep a bottled water on my bedside table, because sometimes I wake up with a dry mouth? Well, I dreamed my mother came to talk with me. She stood at the side of the bed and I can’t remember now what we said, but I remember her suddenly saying, ’You must be getting thirsty,’ and handed me the water bottle. I took it from her… and suddenly I was awake, and the water bottle was in my hand.”
Contact dreams often come because a spirit person wants to touch in with a loved one on the Earth plane. Sometimes, we can even summon that person. When you go to sleep at night, think about the spirit person you miss and see if they’ll contact you through a dream.
