This is the story of how two mothers-in-law, who never met each other in life, connected in the spirit world to deliver a message to their loved ones that they were supporting each other on the other side.
Once a week, I volunteer at a food bank. Big-box stores, grocery chains and Amazon donate dry goods and produce to our establishment, which is then made available to food-challenged residents – we refer to them as “our neighbours.” Several times a week, we get huge skids of vegetables, which I and others then carry out to the public area so people can shop for their families.
A few days ago, I was sorting through green and red peppers in the refrigeration room, and not really thinking about anything except picking the best peppers for placement. Suddenly, an image of Margaret, my stepmother (my father’s second wife), who passed five years ago, popped into my mind. She was wearing her favourite dress, and appeared in my thoughts so clearly that she kinda surprised me!
Showing me a big smile, Margaret said “Anyu” was fine. Anyu is my mother-in-law – the Hungarian word for mother – we called my first husband’s mother. Anyu had passed away a few days ago, just shy of her hundred and second birthday. Margaret mentally told me Anyu was fine and resting. She was keeping Anyu company, and helping her get comfortable in the spirit world. Hearing that, a warm feeling flowed through me and I thanked Margaret for the message.
Anyu had been losing energy for several years, so I had figured there was a good chance she would be resting when she went into spirit. When someone transitions after a long illness, or after years of dementia, their spirit often needs time on the other side to take it easy and get its energy back, so it could visit their loved ones on the Earth plane.
After that mental visitation, it took a few moments for me to reorient myself back to the business of picking pretty peppers (please, no Peter Piper jokes). I thought it was interesting that Margaret brought Anyu through, as they had never met each other here. Nevertheless, it was very thoughtful of Margaret to be the messenger; it would give great comfort to Anyu’s family, because it was the first sign that she fully transitioned to spirit and is doing okay as she acclimates to her new environment.
After my shift, I texted my ex-husband to let him know what happened. He was very pleased to hear of it.
I knew why Margaret came to me, and why she was helping Anyu. First, Margaret was familiar with my work, while Anyu, who was a very strict Catholic, was not. My ex never told her what I did for a living; if he had, I’m sure she would’ve thought I was in league with the devil.
And secondly, Margaret – like Anyu – was a devout Catholic, and Margaret’s religious background would be the best support for my ultra-religious ex-mother-in-law to help her understand how her beliefs might change on the other side. I know that quite often, once people get to the spirit world and they’re able to see the big picture of life and reality, their beliefs change.
The next day, I smelled Anyu’s perfume – lilac, which seemed to just come out of the air. That sign came unexpectedly and was so succinct, it couldn’t be anyone else! I hope it was her way of saying something like, “Now I understand, and thank you for remembering me.”
