THE GIFT OF LIGHTS

Kalisma called me because she was afraid of the lights. When I picked up the phone in my office to begin our Skype session, she urgently blurted out, “I’m so stressed out! I don’t know who to talk to, because I’m sure no one will take me seriously! But I need help! Can you help me? I don’t know who else to call!”

“Whoa,” I said, “slow down, Kalisma.” Spirit told me this woman was not in danger, just easily excited. I took a moment to collect my thoughts and listened to her racing breaths. Then, with a gentle voice, I asked, “Let’s start at the beginning.”

She ran her fingers through her short dark hair. “You’re the first person I’ve ever talked to about this,” she said “I don’t know how to say it, so I’m just going to come out and—” She took a deep breath. “I think I’m being haunted. Just like on that TV program Ghost Adventures, have you ever watched it.

“I’m familiar with it,” I said. Ghost Adventures is one of my favourite shows. In fact, I keep hoping for my birthday my husband will buy me an Ovilus, an electronic device that allows spirits to choose words and “speak.”

“Well, just like on that show – balls of white light keep following me around! Thank goodness they don’t follow me into work. How would I explain them to my boss?”

Kalisma said it started about 30 years ago, when she was a teenager: once in awhile, white circles appeared when people took photographs of her. “They popped up a lot in pictures at my birthday parties, and there were a bunch of them in some of my wedding photographs,” she said. “In one picture, it looked like there was a white rainbow across my heart that touched my husband.”

But lately, Kalisma continued, at odd moments, she’d see white flashes in the corner of an eye. And last month, she was at the cemetery to visit her parents’ graves and saw twinkling white lights above her parents’ tombstones. Then, just before she went to sleep that night, there were two blinking lights over the bed. “At first I thought they were lightening bugs,” she said. “But that made no sense, So, what’s going on with me? Is it ghosts, aliens, my imagination, or am I just crazy?”

Goodness, I thought, where do I start? “First, let me assure you that you’re fine and you have nothing to worry about. Actually, I think you’re pretty blessed. Because I believe what you’re seeing are orbs.”

I explained that orbs were spheres of spirit energy, which is a form of light. When loved ones in spirit want to present themselves, they take a circular shape – the easiest shape to create – and pop by to say hi.

“They especially like to touch in with us around special occasions like birthdays, weddings and anniversaries of their passing,” I said. “It’s their way of saying you’re still important to them and they love you for remembering them. Which is why you saw those lights at your wedding, and above your parents’ graves.”

“You think those lights were the ghosts of my parents?”

“Not ghosts, but their spirits. A ghost hasn‘t transitioned into the light, while your parents have. And you know how I can tell? Because they’re right here, talking to me.” And I proceeded to describe the Middle-eastern couple standing together. Kalisma recognized them, and happily took their messages of encouragement about the new job she was starting next month. And by the end of our session, Kalisma said she felt that her stress was gone.

“Tell my mom and dad that I appreciate having them around,” she said. “And tell them they can visit me whenever they’d like.”

“You just told them yourself,” I said.

Kalisma thanked me again before she signed off, and I took a few minutes to prepare myself for my next Skype session. The next morning, when I opened my email inbox, I found a selfie from Kalisma. It was faint, but it looked like there were two white dots over her right shoulder.
