A recent session with a client who believed her father had telephoned her on her birthday – three years after he had died – reminded me of a similar story that still sends tingles up my spine when I think about it.
Several years ago, Laura booked an appointment on the second anniversary of her husband’s passing. Laura, a widow with two college-age sons, seemed very hesitant to talk at the beginning of our session; she said she had never been to a psychic medium before, so I tried to ease her nervousness with a few minutes of friendly chatter.
The chatter turned into a one-sided conversation. Laura’s silence was so strong, I grew concerned.
“Laura,” I said, “what’s bothering you?”
“My husband, Bill,” she said tentatively. “I think he called me last night. On the phone.”
At this point, I knew Bill had passed, but I was intrigued to know more, and gently prompted Laura to talk.
“Last night, I was thinking about what it would be like to see you,” she began. “I almost called to cancel the session, because I didn’t think anything would happen. I didn’t want to be disappointed.”
Just as she was falling asleep, she continued, the landline by her bed rang and she reached for the receiver. Bringing it to her ear, she heard a hollow sound, like what you hear when you put a seashell to your ear. Then the sound of wind. “Who’s this?” she sleepily asked. The wind died down and fuzzy static filled the line.
She was about to hang up when she heard a male voice, as if the fellow talking was standing three rooms away. His words were garbled, but the tone of voice seemed familiar—
Laura, suddenly fully awake, sat up in bed. “Bill?” she asked. “Bill! Is that you?”
She strained to hear burbled syllables, but it sounded like, hello… how’s every… thing… I’m here…
“Bill!” Laura shrieked.
The phone cut off. In her ear, silence. Not even a dial tone.
Her first thought was someone played a cruel trick on her. She punched *69 to get the last caller, but the number that showed up belonged to her son’s phone. He was studying at the University of Waterloo, and Laura had spoken to him an hour ago.
She immediately called the phone company and asked for the number of the person who had just called. After berating the poor operator, she was told the last call on her line was about an hour ago, from Waterloo.
“My hands were shaking as I hung up the phone and lay back in bed,” Laura said. “The voice sounded so much like Bill. Was it possible…?” Her voice trailed away.
I said a prayer, centred myself and asked for Bill to come forward. He came across as very headstrong man who was good with numbers. (He had been an accountant.) I gave Laura more descriptors and messages about her family, and then other family relations in spirit made their presence. While relating that information, I felt Bill’s presence hovering in the background and asked him to acknowledge the phone call. He didn’t reply. Perhaps it was something private between his wife and him.
Or had she been dreaming? I believe our loved ones in spirit can appear in our dreams, but using the phone?
Since that session, I’ve come to understand that spirit, which is energy, can interact with electronic devices, which also run on energy. I’ve taken dozens of orb pictures on my digital camera, and I’ve heard some amazing disembodied voices (electronic voice phenomenon) captured on digital recorders. And there are wonderful anecdotal stories of people who’ve asked spirit to contact them on their computers, then left the devices on all night and found messages on their screens the next day.
I actually tried that once, but no words came through. But writing this story, it’s made me curious to try it again. If something happens, I’ll certainly let you know.
Dad, are you listening?
