GOING GENTLY INTO THE LIGHT

I recently marked the day which would have been the 100th birthday of my mentor, Sadie Nickerson. It was a quietly special time for me, and I spent most of that day remembering my teacher, friend and surrogate mother. She was a powerful woman who had lived with and mastered adversity. For more than 20 years, I had visited her often and when I was living in Cape Breton, we talked weekly by phone. But in her last months, time caught up with her 87-year-old body, and congestive heart failure was shutting her down. She had weeks – perhaps days – to live. But I don’t want to think of that – I would rather remember the last time I had seen her, and how her going into spirit strengthened my belief that life continues after we experience this transition called death.

My husband, Benjamin, was telling me about a shaman he had interviewed. The native woman works with the dying, and is often called to go into a hospital room and assist someone who’s either not conscious, or slipping in and out of consciousness. “She claims to be able to communicate with people through telepathy,” Benjamin said sceptically. “I don’t believe in mind readers.” I told him that telepathy wasn’t mind-reading – and, in fact, I’ve done it several times.

I’m just back from a week in Lily Dale, where I worked at several outdoor message services while Benjamin helped Sharon Klingler with her week-long mediumship workshop. My week had many highlights, including jumping up on a bench (like Sally Field in the movie Norma Rae) to give messages because a microphone stopped working, meeting a woman who spoke fluent Lemurian, giving spiritual healings at the Healing Temple, and delivering three greetings from spirit that astounded me.

MY HEART WILL GO ON AND ON

After a day of giving psychic and mediumistic readings to clients, it’s nice to relax with a cup of tea and a good book. A few afternoons ago, I decided to do something different – I made an avocado smoothie (great for the heart), then opened the new Nora Roberts novel. My friend Rochelle’s face popped vividly into my mind. I never ignore nudges from my intuition, so I placed Nora aside and telephoned Rochelle, who I hadn’t talked with in months. I was glad I called – Rochelle was distraught. Her best friend’s fiancé had suddenly died, four days before his wedding, and Rochelle’s circle of friends was devastated.

CUTTING THE TIES THAT BIND

I recently taught my seminar “Manifesting Your Mate” at Lily Dale, New York, one of the largest Spiritualist communities in the world. Every summer, the gated Victorian village offers, among other things, classes in mediumship, personal growth and spiritual development. My workshop taught men and women how to be receptive to finding a likeminded individual that they would want to share their life with. I also talked about what NOT to look for in a potential partner. Afterward, listening to some of my students’ stories, I realized that what often keeps people from finding happiness with a new person is that it is hard to walk away from a relationship that no longer serves them. So, if I teach this workshop again, I’m going to include my meditation, “Cutting The Ties That Bind.”
