A FEW WORDS WITH WAYNE DYER

In 1998, my awarding-winning journalist husband, Benjamin, interviewed Dr. Wayne W. Dyer for Cleveland Life, an African-American magazine published in Cleveland, Ohio. In light of Mr. Dyer’s recent passing, I thought reprinting the piece would be a touching tribute to a man who helped so many of us – and has gone far too soon.

Silence stilled the air as more than 200 people watched Lori’s caretaker gently push the wheelchair to the front of the crowd. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – better known as ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease – had weakened Lori’s body, but her will was strong, and she was determined to deliver a message from spirit to the crowd at Inspiration Stump in Lily Dale. Lori’s body slumped back in her chair, and her caretaker gently propped her forward. Another woman held a microphone to Lori’s face so her words could be heard. I held my breath and, like so many others around me, concentrated on sending Lori the energy she needed to complete her wish.

“I feel numb,” Kylie said as she watched her right hand slowly stir her coffee. After a moment, she looked up at me. “I don’t feel my mother anymore. And that makes me feel really empty.”

I’m always excited and honoured to be invited to teach a workshop or do an event – but I draw the line at going somewhere where people get shot at. Case in point: Recently, I was contacted by a television producer to participate in a reality show called “International Psychic Challenge.” I was flattered to be asked and I was intrigued to represent Canada on an international stage. Then, I was horrified to see that the program would be filmed in Kiev, Ukraine.

SPIRITS IN THE FAMILY TREE

I was a little nervous, because I’d never given this type of reading before. I was going to be a kind-of detective, a seeker of souls lost in the mystery of time. Dora wanted me to contact spirits she had never met, because they held important clues to who she was, and where Dora came from. So, when she knocked on my office door a few afternoons ago, I whispered a quick prayer to my guides for help, then placed a smile on my face and ushered her in.
